Jason Koebler is a technology journalist and media entrepreneur, best known as the cofounder of 404 Media and former editor-in-chief of VICE’s Motherboard. His career has been defined by fearless reporting on how technology shapes society, with a focus on consumer rights, generative AI, privacy, internet culture, and public records.

Koebler began his career at Motherboard, where he worked as a staff writer before becoming editor-in-chief. During his six years leading the publication, he oversaw its editorial, creative, and commercial vision, producing award-winning investigative work and documentaries. His reporting has ranged from the right-to-repair movement to the ticket scalping industry, and he has consistently highlighted hidden dynamics in technology and policy.

In 2022, Koebler co-founded 404 Media alongside fellow journalists Samantha Cole, Joseph Cox, and Emanuel Maiberg. The outlet quickly gained recognition for its independent, investigative approach, earning the 2024 EFF Award for Fearless Journalism. Beyond his editorial work, Koebler also served as an executive producer on Netflix’s Encounters, a documentary series exploring humanity’s search for alien life. Today, he remains one of the most cited technology reporters on Techmeme’s leaderboard, continuing to shape conversations at the intersection of technology, culture, and civic life.
