New Delhi Television Ltd (NDTV) is one of India’s most influential news organisations, founded in 1984 by economist Prannoy Roy and journalist Radhika Roy. It began as a production house creating news segments for Doordarshan at a time when Indian television was still a state monopoly, and quickly became known for innovative broadcast formats and editorial independence. Its early programme The World This Week became a national hit and helped define modern Indian TV journalism.

Through the 1990s and early 2000s, NDTV evolved into India’s first independent news network, partnering with global broadcasters like Star India and CNN to introduce 24×7 news culture to the country. In 2003, it launched NDTV India and NDTV 24x7, establishing itself as a leader in both Hindi and English news broadcastingWikipedia. The network became known for election coverage innovations, including India’s first live telecast of election results in 1989, which set the template for all future broadcasters.

In 2022, the Adani Group acquired a majority stake in NDTV, marking a major shift in the company’s ownership structure and prompting several high‑profile resignations. Today, NDTV operates across broadcast and digital platforms, maintaining a strong presence through NDTV.com and regional expansions, while navigating a rapidly changing media landscape. Its legacy remains rooted in pioneering Indian TV journalism and shaping how news is produced, delivered, and debated across the country.
