The University of Bergen (UiB) is Norway’s second‑oldest public university, founded in 1946, though its roots trace back to scientific institutions established as early as 1825. It is located in the coastal city of Bergen, surrounded by fjords and mountains, and has grown into an internationally recognized research university. UiB is home to more than 20,000 students and over 4,000 staff, offering a wide range of programs across seven faculties, including medicine, law, humanities, social sciences, and natural sciences.

UiB is particularly renowned for its strength in marine and climate research, hosting centers such as the Bjerknes Centre for Climate Research, one of Europe’s leading hubs in the field. It also houses four Norwegian Centres of Excellence, reflecting its high academic standards and interdisciplinary approach. The university consistently ranks among the top 200 institutions worldwide in specialized fields like earth and marine sciences, and it plays a central role in Norway’s academic landscape as part of the Coimbra Group and the U5 consortium of established universities.

Beyond academics, UiB contributes significantly to cultural and civic life. The University Museum of Bergen holds some of Norway’s largest collections of natural and cultural history, including Viking artifacts and marine exhibits. The city itself enriches student life with festivals, concerts, and a vibrant international atmosphere. UiB’s strategy emphasizes sustainability, diversity, and global engagement, making it not only a place of learning but also a driver of innovation and social responsibility.
