Ana Swanson is an American journalist specializing in trade and international economics. She is currently a reporter for The New York Times, covering global trade policies, economic shifts, and U.S.-China relations.

Originally from Story City, Iowa, Swanson graduated from Northwestern University in 2004 with a degree in cultural anthropology. She later earned a master’s degree in international relations from Johns Hopkins University.

Before joining The New York Times in 2017, she worked at The Washington Post, covering trade, the Federal Reserve, and economic policy. She also spent eight years in China, where she learned Mandarin and wrote about business and economics, serving as editor-in-chief of China Economic Review from 2011 to 2013.

Swanson has contributed to publications such as Foreign Policy, Forbes, CNN, and The Atlantic. She is also a regular contributor to American Public Media’s “Marketplace” and helps run the International China Journalists Association.
