Business Standard

Business Standard is an Indian English‑language daily newspaper, founded in 1975, that has become one of the country’s leading financial publications. It covers the Indian economy, infrastructure, international trade, corporate governance, and financial quotations, offering readers a comprehensive view of business and policy developments. Published in both English and Hindi, the newspaper operates from 12 regional centres including Mumbai, New Delhi, Kolkata, Bengaluru, and Chennai, reaching readers in over 1,000 towns and cities across India.

The paper was originally owned by the Kolkata‑based ABP Group, but mounting financial losses led to its sale in 1997 to Kotak Mahindra Finance, in a deal spearheaded by Uday Kotak. Under new ownership, Business Standard stabilized and grew into India’s second‑largest business daily for many years. By 2019, readership surveys ranked it as the fourth largest financial newspaper, with a total readership of over 500,000, and by early 2020 it had regained ground to become the third‑highest selling financial newspaper in India, behind The Economic Times and Mint.

Editorially, Business Standard has been shaped by prominent journalists such as T. N. Ninan, who served as editor from 1993 to 2009 before becoming chairman and editorial director. He was succeeded by Dr. Sanjaya Baru, former media advisor to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, and later by Ashok K. Bhattacharya. The current editor is Shailesh Dobhal. With more than 100 business journalists on staff, the newspaper remains a key source of reporting on government policy, corporate affairs, and financial markets, maintaining its reputation as a trusted voice in India’s business journalism.
