Deutsche Welle (DW) is Germany’s international broadcaster, founded in 1953 with the mission of providing impartial information and fostering dialogue across borders. Originally launched as a shortwave radio service, DW has since grown into a multimedia organization producing television, radio, and online content in 32 languages. Its headquarters are located in Bonn and Berlin, with additional bureaus worldwide, reflecting its global outlook and commitment to reaching diverse audiences.

Funded by the German federal government but operating under the Deutsche Welle Act, DW maintains editorial independence while serving as a voice for democratic values and cultural exchange. With more than 4,000 employees from over 140 nationalities, the broadcaster emphasizes diversity and international collaboration. DW Akademie, its media development branch, plays a key role in training journalists and supporting press freedom, especially in regions where independent media face challenges.

Today, DW reaches an estimated weekly audience of over 300 million people, making it one of the most influential international broadcasters. Its membership in the European Broadcasting Union further strengthens its role in global media cooperation. By combining news, cultural programming, and educational initiatives, DW continues to position itself as a trusted source of information and a bridge between Germany and the world.
