The European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) is an independent agency of the European Union, responsible for scientific risk assessment related to food safety. Established in 2002, EFSA provides expert advice on food-related risks, including biological hazards, chemical contaminants, nutrition, and animal health.

EFSA works closely with EU institutions, national authorities, and international organizations to ensure food safety across Europe. Its Panel on Biological Hazards (BIOHAZ) focuses on foodborne diseases, antimicrobial resistance, and microbiological risks. The agency also updates the Qualified Presumption of Safety (QPS) list, which evaluates the safety of biological agents used in food and feed.
