The European Parliament is one of the key institutions of the European Union (EU), representing the citizens of the member states. It plays a central role in the EU's legislative process, working alongside the Council of the European Union and the European Commission. Members of the European Parliament (MEPs) are directly elected by EU citizens every five years, making it the only EU institution chosen through direct elections.

Its main functions include:

• Passing Legislation: The Parliament debates and votes on laws proposed by the European Commission.
• Budgetary Role: It oversees and approves the EU budget, ensuring that funds are allocated appropriately. • Oversight and Accountability: The Parliament monitors the activities of other EU bodies and holds them accountable, including approving the appointment of the European Commission.

The Parliament meets in two primary locations: Strasbourg, France (for plenary sessions) and Brussels, Belgium (for committee meetings and additional sessions). It embodies the democratic principles of the EU, promoting transparency and citizen engagement within the union.
