I'm adding a "Buy Me a Coffee" button and why you should too

21 March 2025

I want people to enjoy my writing without a paywall.

I love sharing my writing with you, and I don’t want a paywall standing between us. Stories and posts should be read, not locked away!

Instead of subscriptions, I’m using Buy Me a Coffee so you can support my work if it brings you joy. No pressure, just gratitude (and maybe a little extra caffeine-fueled inspiration). This way, you can enjoy my content freely, and if you’d like to help me keep creating, a small contribution goes a long way!

Here’s how I added the “Buy Me a Coffee” button. Also heads up, I am in no way affiliated with Buy Me a Coffee and this is actually my first time using it.

Setting up your account

1. Create an account at www.buymeacoffee.com
2. Setup your page with your Name (I used my substack name) and give a bit of a description under “about”.
3. For a profile picture, I used my substack picture to keep everything the uniformed.
4. Next you’ll setup your payout method.

Now for the fun part where you can personalize your page

1. You can change “coffee” to anything you want! Maybe you change it to “buy me a book” or something more creative.
2. You can even change the emoji. I’m lame and kept the “buy me a coffee” because I really do love coffee.
3. I changed my theme color to match my substack brand color. If you don’t know what color your substack is, you can use an eye dropper.

Next up, you can add a cover image

Changing the support type

1. Go to “Supporters” and then click “settings”

You can switch it over to “number of coffees” or even change the metaphor. And change the emoji or text

Now lets add the button to Substack

1. Go to your Substack post and click “custom” under “button”

2. Copy and paste your Buy Me a Coffee URL

3. Tada!!!!

You are all set up!!!! Let the coffee start brewing. If you have any other tips, I’d love to hear them. Lets continue growing and supporting our little beautiful magical community.

If this page helped you at all, I would love if you considered buying me a coffee ;)
