UNESCO, the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization, is a specialized agency of the UN founded in 1945 in the aftermath of World War II. Headquartered in Paris, France, its mission is to promote peace, sustainable development, and human rights through international collaboration in education, science, culture, and communication. With 194 member states and 12 associate members, UNESCO operates across six domains of expertise, including literacy, ocean sciences, cultural preservation, and freedom of expression.

The organization plays a pivotal role in shaping global education policies, advancing scientific research, and safeguarding cultural heritage. It’s best known for its World Heritage Sites program, which protects landmarks of outstanding universal value. UNESCO also supports initiatives that foster media independence, gender equality, and intercultural dialogue. Its work is guided by the belief that intellectual and moral solidarity among nations is essential to lasting peace.

UNESCO is governed by a General Conference of member states, which meets biennially to set priorities and elect the Executive Board and Director-General. Through its global network of field offices and national commissions, UNESCO implements programs that empower communities, preserve traditions, and promote inclusive knowledge-sharing. From rebuilding war-torn schools to championing digital literacy, UNESCO continues to be a beacon for global cooperation and cultural understanding
